Exhibition in museum Estrine: Marie-Pierre Thiébaut

Cultural

From 3 August to 22 December, the Musée Estrine will be exhibiting the artist Marie-Pierre Thiébaut!

Visit Marie-Pierre Thiébaut's exhibition ‘Se faire Nature’ at the Musée Estrine from 3 August to 22 December.

Trained as a sculptor by Ossip Zadkine, Marie-Pierre Thiébaut (1933-2010) worked with the architect Fernand Pouillon in Algeria in 1967 and 1968. The light and materials of the south made a deep impression on her and formed the basis of her work. She developed an intimate relationship with nature, which manifested itself in the gradual integration of elements gleaned from the very heart of her compositions. The body is the one through which everything passes, and is at the heart of her practice. It is through the body that the gesture springs, but it is also the body that imprints its form, as in the series of thumbprints, breasts, belly, etc. Marie-Pierre Thiébaut's sculpture is characterised by the organic, like the reminiscence of an original pulse, an embodied primary movement, a vital expansion that we recognise as self-evident.

Her relative discretion at the forefront of the artistic scene makes her a rare artist, part of whose work was imagined in the Provençal garrigue near Gordes, where she had set up a house-studio. Marguerite Duras was one of the first to acknowledge the ‘strength and grace’ of her sculpture in a text she wrote in 1972. This retrospective exhibition in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, on the Provençal soil she had chosen, will recall the profound conversations at work in her work, the constant back-and-forth between the self and the world in the indefectible bond that united her with Nature.
